Legislation in New South Wales requires the owners of all commercial vessels operated in waters in that State to have and to implement a safety management system (“SMS”) which identifies any significant risks that may arise from the vessel’s operation, and to specify the controls used to manage those risks. Non-compliance is an offence. The SMS is required to be audited each year.
NSW Maritime takes the view that this legislation applies to ANUSC and other clubs. ANUSC does not necessarily accept that the legislation is applicable in respect of its vessels. However the Committee believes that it is beneficial for the Club to have a formal document of this kind to set out its safety policies, in conjunction with other safety-related material which is published on this website.
